Role of Saturn on the spiritual path

THE ROLE OF SATURN ON THE SPIRITUAL PATH
-by Joyce Hoen DF Astrol S-

(This article was previously published in the Astrological Journal, UK, Spring issue 2001 )

Recently I read the biography of a Sufi practitioner who started his book by
saying that Sufism basically knows three Paths: the path away from God, the path to God and the path in God. Sufism is a mystical tradition where God is the Beloved in the heart; it is about merging with the Divine Love. While reading this, I thought: “Wait a minute, what a wonderful way to describe the three cycles of Saturn in a lifetime!” The first 29.6 years of our lives we usually spend ‘away from the Source’ which can (but does not always need to) change dramatically during the first Saturn-return, after which we slowly but surely become ‘seekers’, more and more attuned to our inner lives which could be called the ‘Path to God’.

Paramahansa Yogananda who lived for just 2 Saturn cycles (he died during his 2nd Saturn return), never even spent the first 29.6 years of his life ‘away from God’: –reading his “Autobiography”–, he tried practically from his birth onwards to consciously return to the Source and seek God, so he already spent the first Saturn cycle ‘on the Path to God’. Many people not on the spiritual path spend their third Saturn cycle (58-83 yrs) more and more ‘in Neptune country’, unconnected to Saturn (time, space and the laws of this life on Earth): they slowly experience a split between body and spirit, developing Alzheimer and dementia. Others manage to integrate the timelessness with Saturn and experience great peace: they radiate wisdom during their third Saturn cycle. As mentioned, not all people consciously or unconsciously turn into seekers after their 1st Saturn-return, but many do, in one way or another.

Halfway during the 2nd Saturn cycle we experience in a short time span both the Saturn-opposition as well as the Neptune-Neptune square. These transits, occurring somewhere between ages 42 and 45, follow a period of many transformations with Pluto and Uranus transits which people currently experience between the age of 35-36 and 42 as a first since its discovery, now that Pluto is so close (relatively speaking) to the Sun and moving so fast (relatively speaking again) through the zodiac (the peak of which occurred during the early nineties). I believe that the period between ages 42 and 45, the period of the transiting Neptune square to Neptune and the 2nd Saturn opposition, is for many people already a transition into the experience of living the Path ‘in God’ so to speak. I once heard a lecture by Alan Oken where one thing he said struck me deeply. He said: “Before your transit of Neptune square Neptune you are seeking God, but after it God seeks you”.

Once I had this very down-to-earth consultation with an alternative healer, which drives this point home in a very succinct manner. She came for a consultation because she was so incredibly busy, and worried about having no time for herself anymore. She thought she needed to make some choices. The year before that, she had started a practice in Belgium with her husband, a medical doctor, which flourished right from the start. She loved the work they were doing together and in fact; she was radiant when I saw her. But she had this problem of no longer having any time for herself. I looked at her chart and saw that she was by that time well beyond her Neptune-square-Neptune transit – the last one had occurred some 9 months before. I looked at her and told her: “What do you mean, you have no time for yourself? Isn’t it precisely your Self who is doing this work and loving every minute of it? You have entered a new stage in life, where you should stop your old way of thinking, the way of thinking of people on the path still ‘seeking the Source’, where spirit and matter are split and seen as two different things. Yes, you used to live in a consciousness where there was time for ‘your self’ and time ‘for work’. But these things have now become one. Your work is an expression of yourself. Change your vocabulary now. You do not need any time for your self, because all your time is from your Self and you love every minute of it. The work is seeking you, the creative life-force is seeking you now, you no longer need to look for it yourself; your self and your Self are one.”

And this is, I think, the great difference between the first stages on the spiritual path, when ‘Neptune and Saturn’ are not integrated yet, and the later stages on the spiritual path, the ‘Path in God’, when things just are the way they are and nothing needs to be sought anymore. And all of this is nothing else but a change in consciousness, not even necessarily a change in the outer circumstances of one’s life. We can feel tremendous inner pain by becoming conscious of the split between spirit and matter; we can feel imprisoned by the realities of this earthly existence and seek for something greater than ourselves. This is in fact a wonderful stage, the stage of the spiritual seeker. In this stage we become acutely aware of Saturn and the need to transform it, making it more transparent, so that at least some of the timelessness, universal compassion and love of Neptune, the universal heart, can shine through. And we work on ourselves, or rather life works on us, as we go through transit after transit ever more consciously after our first Saturn-return. And then one day, lo and behold, whether set off by a chain of incredibly traumatic experiences or subtly and all by itself, one day we are at peace with ourselves and find our destiny on this planet, not away from it, and Neptune and Saturn are integrated: the eternal and time itself are the same.

If this hypothesis is all true, or even to some extent only, it means that Saturn plays a tremendously important role on our spiritual path, because it is only by means of Saturn that we can come to grasp anything of the trans-Saturnian realm. In astrology many people equate ‘spirituality’ with Neptune and all its other derivatives. When we seek the less confined more exalted states of being, for instance in trance, by means of drugs or even alcohol, we all try to fly to Neptune, transcending or even forgetting about Saturn, and consequently our fall back to Saturn is hard and very painful. In fact, seeking Neptune without taking Saturn along is part of the ‘split’ and a guarantee for encountering problems on the path. And this applies to much more mundane everyday situations in life too.

Regardless of the three Saturn-cycles, or perhaps I should say, parallel to it, we have within ourselves three qualities of Saturn. The first quality is where we try to close ourselves off from anything that we cannot comprehend, narrowing our focus to the truths we can perceive with the senses only. Oftentimes this ends up as a Saturn who needs to regulate everything outside of us, we harden and tend to be chaotic on the inside at the same time. This Saturn-quality is pretty ‘thick’. We can also ignore Saturn altogether, and adhere to the flight-mechanisms, seeking relief in alcohol, drugs or other escapist things. Being an escapist actually means literally this: escaping from Saturn! This Saturn-quality is pretty ‘thin’ as in ignored. (With Saturn placements in the 8th or the 12th it can become quite easy to escape it, though this certainly isn’t true for everybody). It may result in blaming the whole world for our experiences, i.e. not taking responsibility for ourselves but feeling ourselves victims (Saturn in the 8th negatively speaking). Neptune is pretty strong here, but Saturn is projected outside and weak inside.

The third quality, the quality of the middle way perhaps, is a Saturn which does take responsibility for itself and refines itself in such a way that more and more of the higher vibrations can be channeled THROUGH the Saturn world of the here and now. If we transpose these three Saturn qualities to our experience of time itself – Saturn equals timing in the first place – we get the state where Saturn is always experienced in relation to past pain and hurt (1), or connected to distant goals in the future (2), or again the middle way, the crossroad between past and future: the here and now (3). If one studies charts of people who (for instance) need a lot of alcohol to survive, it is quite easy to find the Neptune factors involved in such a chart. Neptunian people are in reality people who are seeking the divine. The key is however to allow the divine to manifest in the here and the now THROUGH our Saturn-ego-content. In charts of alcoholics you will consistently find that the Capricorn and Saturn content is difficult to identify with (i.e. to take responsibility for their own journey). Capricorn and/or Saturn might indeed be connected with the 8th or 12th house for instance (houses that we do not identify with as ‘being our own’).

Saturn is the crux of the matter with all Neptunian things in life, not so much Neptune, is what I am merely trying to say. All the trans-Saturnian forces need to operate THROUGH our Saturn-content to make it workable in our every day lives. The path of aligning the ego with the higher Self is not an easy one. Saturn is not too friendly towards the ego, as we all know. We all know what insecurity means. We all know what it means to be put down by someone else and how this hurts (it is the ego which gets hurt). We tend to experience this the easiest in those areas of life connected with the houses ruled by Saturn and/or where Saturn is placed. In the first 30 years of our lives Saturn (and our ego) needs to be built UP, we need support from authorities (Saturn) outside of ourselves. But this changes after 29.6 and yet, most people still give other people the authority to approve and justify their acts. The fear of failure in the eyes of someone else, insecurity and needing approval are extremely interesting dynamics. If I am sensitive to what others say about whatever it might be that I am sensitive about, it means I give my Saturn away to others. This is fine if I am not yet 30 years of age, but then something should really change. And yet, so often do we fail to understand this truth, even if life is trying to beat it into us.

The whole astrology world, at least in the USA right now, so anxious for outer acceptance by society, is in fact an example of the same dynamic. If we are insecure about our astrology, yes we DO need acceptance from the outer world, because how else are we going to atone this insecurity? – we reason. But think about the following for a moment: say you were born with Capricorn on the 6th house cusp and Saturn in the 5th house. You may be pretty sensitive about your work methods and may need to reconcile this by being ambitious, working hard and yet, all this for just a single reason (a goal in the ‘future’): to become accepted by your superiors. Of course, with Capricorn on the 6th house cusp, you are finding out that nobody sees the amount of work you put into something and you don’t feel you get the recognition you think you so deserve. All these dynamics are fine for someone in the first Saturn-cycle, but for all those who are older: reflect for a moment on what happens if someone DOES recognize you? What happens, is in fact that you will not believe it! You will start to minimize your own efforts all of a sudden, or doubting whether the other person actually means it. You will continuously doubt yourself in all the areas related to Saturn and Capricorn! Whatever other people say!

I tend to tell my clients that there is one area in their life where they will not gain any approval from others, where they are on their own, the area related to Capricorn and Saturn in their charts. And I tell them: “you see, it does not matter what someone else says, because Saturn stays a pain in the ass as long as you project the thing onto someone else, or a system outside of yourself. Saturn is in reality not the outer authority, it is an inner authority. It is your own conscience whose approval you unknowingly are seeking, and our own conscience is the first gate to God indeed.” Therefore it does not help whether someone outside approves or disapproves. Yet, how difficult it is to listen to our inner conscience, because the truth is, we judge ourselves so much harsher than anybody else ever would. Yes Saturn is kind of harsh for the ego, but in truth not for the Soul, to the contrary. To make this turn-around is in fact to change from karma to dharma. From burdens on our backs to walking the path in the here and now. Firm yet flexible, the 3rd Saturn-quality.

RULES IN JYOTISH

WRITTEN BY VEDIC JYOTISHI SHANKER JI

In this article we will discuss about how to analyze a chart and what needs to be checked when analyzing a chart in order to get correct results.

Each varga chakra is controlled by a planet called as it becomes the significator of that varga chakra. For example let us say we want to see D-10(Dasamsa) then Mercury will be controlling the varga chakra related to D-10 as it is the chart of career and our growth. In the same way if we are looking at D-4(chaturthamsa) then Moon becomes the Primary significator as Moon denotes mother and all the assets we acquire during our life time.

If the Lagnesh(Lagna lord),Vargesh(Varga chakra significator) and Karaka(every varga has a karaka) are all placed in Kendra(1,4,7,10) or Trikona(5,9) then the areas controlled by that varga chakra will prosper in the entire life of the native

Let us take an example of D-7. D-7 is called as Saptamamsha as it is connected to child birth. If the Venus(semen),Jupiter(natural significator of child) and the lagna lord of the rasi chakra are well placed in Kendra or Trikona then we can say that the native is extremely happy with respect to his children.

If the planets are placed in 1,4,5,7,9,10 and 11 are nicely placed in the varga then such varga chakra will prosper and if there is any planet in the 2nd house then the native is lucky with respect to finances but not with respect to family relationship as 2nd is 8th from the 7th.

Planets which are acquiring Drig Bala(Direction strength) will give results and they are strong

Jupiter and Mercury in the lagna

Moon and Venus in the 4th house

Saturn in the 7th house

Mars and Sun in the 10th house

Planets placed in 3,6,8,12 or if the lords of these associated are somehow placed in any varga chakra then the results will be bad as these are considered as Dusthanas. Here note that there is an exception to this rule. Saturn in the 8th is good,Mars in the 6th is good and Venus in the 12th will always give good results.

Vipareeta Raja Yoga is that where the lords of the 6,8,12 falls into any dusthana bhavas. In this case native will face initial challenges in his life and will lead to better life in the future.VRY should not be conjoined by any other planets as it may lead to dilution of such Yoga.

Malefic lords if placed in 3,6,10,11(Upachaya) are good as native makes progress his life.Upachaya denotes growth

Planetary placement should always be strong like being placed in the own sign,Friends signs,Moolatrikona or the sign of exaltation as they tend to give good results. If a planet is strong placed in the rasi chakra but badly placed or weak in the Varga chakra then the results will get modified by high to low.

Neecha Grahas or grahas which are combust or grahas which are with its enemies or in a enemy sign the results will be weak and poor

Any planet placed in the same sign in the rasi chakra or D-9 or any varga chakra becomes powerful by the blessing of such planetary placement.

For Movable sign the blessing comes from Brahma

For Fixed sign the blessing comes from Shiva

For Dual sign the blessing comes from Vishnu.

Jupiter associating with any sign or aspecting any sign will only enhance the qualities of that sign even though it is placed in an enemy sign.

Planetary placement needs to be studied in the rasi,D-9 or Varga chakra and see whether they are strong or weak. Strength of these planets will enhance the quality of the varga chakra it is placed in and reverse when weak.

When seeing the samandha of the planets in the rasi chakra we should know that planets of the Mahadasha and the antardasha should not be inimical to each other as they tend to obstruct the outcome of such dasa and at the same time the distance between the MD or AD lord should not be 6/8,2/12 as bad results can be expected. 6/8 is disease and death, enemity or debts whereas 2/12 is bandhana yoga which can result in imprisonment in jail or house arrest depending on whether planets are malefics or beneics

Dasa CHIDRA has be to check whether any issue is cropping up in the MD or AD period and necessary remedial measures initiated. No planet should be operating simultaneously and placed in the 2nd or 7th from Mahadasha lord as it leads to death of the native.

Lagna placed in any varga chakra rules all the outcome associated with that varga chakra. Like for example if the lagna lord of the D-10 is badly placed then natives career will be disturbed as Lagna denotes self.

With respect to strength of the planet using Bhinna-Ashtakavarga and Sarva-Ashtakavarga it is very important ot check for the points given as any thing more than 28 is good and anything less than 24 is bad. The same applies to SAV anything less than 5 is bad and anything more than 8 is good.

Malefics planets transiting the sign which is having 28 points bad results are reduced whereas any benefic planet transiting a sign having 28 points good results are enhanced.

Looking for curses is important in the rashichakra and necessary remedial measures are to be recommended for such curses. See Moola dasa for the final analysis of the curse. The most benefic planet when comes under curse gives the most bad results.

Transits has to be checked from Sun,Moon,Arudha lagna and Arudha padas and also transit from Moon in the Navamsa is very important as it shows what is in hold for us as Navamsa denotes baghya or luck in this life.

Planetary aspects are good if the planet is benefic and reverse it is bad…Planetary aspects are temporary and only work during the dasa periods operating where sign aspect it permanent and work through out the life.

THE TENTH HOUSE

EXTRACTS FROM ‘THE CRUX OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY : TIMING OF EVENTS ’ BY © SANJAY RATH JI

(Lenthy article but one of the precious article for every astro learners
Must read with patience)

The tenth house deals with prosperity growth (significator Jupiter), karma including all works, actions (significator Saturn), professions & career (significator Mercury), fame (significator Jupiter & Moon), respect (significator Jupiter), status and social rights including power (significator Sun). It represents the mid-heaven and plays a vital role in the chart, second in importance only to the ascendant. Low Ashtakavarga bindu in these houses can considerably weaken a chart. All planets in the tenth house generally give very good results. Even Rahu gives pilgrimages if in the tenth in the natal chart or from the Narayana dasa sign. Houses whose lords are in the tenth house gain considerable strength and the activities ruled by them succeed. The tenth house has Argala on the 6th, 7th, 9th and 12th houses thereby directly affecting enemies, servants, fortune and sleep that are ruled by these houses and other matters as well.

For example, Chanakya says that a king can never fall if his servants are faithful. If the servants are faithful, the sixth house is favorable and the enemies also ruled by the sixth house cannot win. This automatically affects the status ruled by the tenth house. Similarly, success automatically brings more business and associates, besides keeping the spouse happy. Ones boss, guru, or lady luck ruled by the ninth house does matter in ones career. The 12th house rules final emancipation and meditation. Bad actions in the tenth house will reflect adversely on the 12th house and Moksha will be denied in the long term while sleep could be adversely hampered in the short term. A fine solution to this negative cycle would be to take up transcendental meditation ™. The 11th, 1st, 2nd, & 8th houses have Argala on the 10th house or are capable of affecting the actions and other matters ruled by the tenth house. Thus gains, self, and net profit or loss will influence decisions and actions. If an exalted or strong natural benefic is in the ascendant, the native will be guided by its ideals and this will have a strong impact on his decisions and action. In this manner, the Argala ’s and their obstruction should be understood.

The fifth house is the eighth from the tenth house representing birth (beginning) and longevity (time of implementation) of an action (10th house). Thus, the fifth house rules authority and power that one enjoys due to skills & knowledge as well as ones Purva punya. The timing of joining a new job is done from the fifth house. Rajyoga also need to be confirmed in the Panchamamsa (D-5 Chart) and the Dasamsa (D-10 chart). The eleventh house from ascendant is the ‘Hara’ or end of life. Similarly, the eighth house being the eleventh from the tenth house is the place of retirement or end of career. The eighth house, if beneficially disposed, can give huge loans to take large enterprises and its argala on the seventh house and 10th house can give a new boost to ones business. If ill disposed, ones business will run into endless debt and ruin. The following maybe borne in mind while analyzing the Dasamsa: –

  1. The Dasamsa should be analyzed in detail independently like the Rasi chart. The Artha Trikona is composed of the second 6th & 10th houses. Planets in these houses will have a direct bearing on the functioning of the native. Any planet in the tenth house is independently capable of giving good yoga that could mean power, rise and success in ones career. In addition, the seventh house should also be studied, as it is the Pada to the tenth. If the Sun dominates in these houses, a political career or similar public service is indicated. If the Moon dominates, Government Service or such other professions like hotel business etc are indicated. Mars gives Police; Intelligence related activities, Army etc. Jupiter produces lawyers, Judges, Priests, Astrologers, etc. Mercury gives business, writing & publishing, trade etc. Venus gives entertainment and all works of beauty while Saturn gives heavy burden, menial jobs etc. Rahu can indicate imports while Ketu shows exports etc. A list is provided at table 13.1.& 13.2
  2. The sixth house rules business and the seventh house rules business. If there are more planets in the sixth house, or if it is otherwise stronger, service is indicated. A stronger seventh house gives an independent business. Similarly, the sixth lord promotes service while the seventh lord promotes business. This could mean instability in service during the period of the seventh lord. Similarly, debilitated malefic in the seventh house will encourage service as they will damage the business.
  3. The boss is seen from the ninth house while the subordinates are seen from the fifth house. During the period of a malefic planet having papargala (malefic obstruction) on the ninth house, one is tormented by the boss (or ex-boss) while a benefic having Subhargala (benefic intervention) shall give a very good and helpful boss. Thus in Charts showing any kind of employment, the concerned houses for the self are the first, 6th & 10th. The third house from these (3rd, 8th & 12th) can cause problems. The eighth house will show retirement; the third house shows short leave while the 12th house shows long leave.
  4. The ascendant lord in the ninth house makes a person very independent (he likes to be his own boss) and business is best advised in such charts or employment where a lot of scope for independent work. The second house is the eighth from the seventh house and shall play a crucial role in starting any business. In simpler words, the starting of any business is determined by the finance available. The quadrants to the 2nd house are the 5th, 8th & 11th houses showing the money that is put in by the partner, loans from banks etc. & self respectively.
  5. The rules for judging the sex and nature of the people involved is the same as that for co-born and children.

Planets in the tenth house generally always give good results .The Sun and Mars that get directional strength in the tenth house can be a great blessing in any chart providing dynamism and success. The sun indicates pride, respect, position, status, responsibility, independent views, and help from politicians and senior officers. The Moon shows fluctuation of fortunes and success in public dealings, water or liquids, emotional views and changeability of work etc. Saturn indicates rapid rise and fall, hard work. Ketu indicates routine job .In this manner; the standard texts provide considerable information on the results of the planets in the tenth house based on the nature of the planet. The second basis is to see the relationship of the planet on the houses it has argala on. If the Sun or Jupiter is in the tenth house, the argala on the ninth house is very favorable and will promote father, guru and good fortune. This will simultaneously, destroy the evil effects of malefic planets in the ninth house. If Rahu or Saturn is in the tenth house, it will have papargala on the ninth house and the father/guru will have to suffer. Saturn will cause many downturns in fortune and life will be a battle of sorts. However, Saturn will have subhargala on the 12th house of which it is a significator and the native could learn spiritual practices like Pranayama that will be very beneficial. Ketu in the 10th house will also have papargala on the ninth house but it will have a subhargala on the 12th house of final emancipation (ketu is mokshkarak). This will lead the native into the spiritual path and teach meditation etc. Malefics in the tenth have papargala on the sixth house and can destroy their significations of the sixth house. For example, if Ketu is in the tenth house it could be very malefic for dogs and such pets while Saturn can create many enemies. Mercury or Venus in the tenth house can be a blessing for business. However, Ketu or Mercury in the tenth will make the native very fickle minded. The third basis is to consider the houses having argala on the planet in the tenth house. The ascendant has sukhargala (intervention for creating happiness) on the tenth house. If the planet in the ascendant is friendly to the planet in the tenth house, then the native has job satisfaction, and if inimical, there will be a lot of dissatisfaction. Thus the argala of the ascendant on the tenth house can promote or damage the prospects of the tenth house because of personal desires and whims. The eleventh house has dhanargala (wealth intervention) on the tenth house. Thus, incentives like bonus can make a dent on the performance. For example, if Rahu is in the eleventh house the results of ones actions will come suddenly while Saturn will delay the fruits. Retrograde planets can even deny the fruits of the actions until they become direct in transit. The eighth house has labhargala on the tenth house. Thus, it determines the end of a work or career. The eleventh house from any bhava has the responsibility of finishing it. This has been aptly stated by Maharishi Jaimini in the stanza Tanou tana danda hara meaning the sixth is the house of punishment and the sixth from the sixth (11th house) is the destroyer (Hara). There are neither real enemies nor any real diseases in this illusionary world. These are only means for the Lord to punish us for our sins. People born on Shasta tithi (the sixth day of the waxing/waning) lunar cycle or during the period of planets in the sixth house from ascendant or the dasa sign, can suffer many problems due to enemies. Fasting on Shasta and worshipping Lord Shiva /Kartikeya is the best means to take the punishment on oneself. This will end the enmity. Similarly, people born on ekadasi (11th day of lunar cycle) or during the period of planets in the eleventh house from ascendant or the planetary dasa sign, can suffer due to shad ripu (six forms of weaknesses like non-vegetarian food, alcohol, sex, etc). They should fast on ekadasi days and worship Sri Maha Vishnu to overcome these weaknesses. The fourth point is to consider the placement of the planet from the various houses. For example, Saturn in the tenth will be in the eighth from the third house and will give a long lived younger co-born. It will also aspect the seventh house to promise a long life to spouse. There is a saying Brahma (Saturn) gives life, Vishnu (Mercury) gives wealth and all means of sustenance, and Shiva (Jupiter) gives marriage, children, Guru and all blessings. Thus if Saturn aspects any house, it gives long life to that house but if it conjoins a house, its longevity is curtailed. Saturn conjoining the lords of the first, 10th & 8th houses can reduce longevity. The Sun or Jupiter in the tenth house will be in the eighth from the third and can destroy the dharma & fortune of the younger brother because they are very inimical to the sixth house from their placement (Sarvartha Chintamani). It was for this very reason that the horoscope of Srila Prabhupada (Chart 99) had to be rectified.

The placement of the tenth lord will tend to carry the effects of the significators (Mercury, Saturn, Sun & Jupiter). Thus if the tenth lord is in the ascendant, due to the effects of Mercury the native will be fickle minded; due to the effects of Saturn the native will have ill-health in childhood (till ten years: Maharishi Parasara); due to the effects of the Sun the native will prefer to pursue an independent profession and due to the effects of Jupiter the native will have fame, Status and honor. The good results of Simhasan Yoga (10th lord in 1st/2nd house) will come after middle age as planets in the 1st, 7th & 9th houses give their results in later life. The second basis is that the tenth lord shows the direction of karma and source of fortunes. If the tenth lord is in the second house or associates with the second lord, family business will be source of livelihood. If the tenth lord is afflicted, then the family business will be disrupted and cause the misfortune of the native. The strength of Jupiter the significator of Family deity is a crucial factor. Since the second house rules food, the tenth lord will also indicate business/ profession related to the hotel industry if the significator Moon also influences the tenth lord. If the tenth lord is in the third house or associates with the third lord, the job may involve constant travelling and short journeys especially if Venus associates with the tenth lord or is in its trines. The co-born (ruled by the third house) will further the career of the native. The third basis is to count the number of signs from the tenth house to the tenth lord and vice-versa. If the tenth lord is in the third house it will be in the sixth from the tenth house and the latter will be in the eighth from it. This implies short-term (eighth house) service (6th house) or contracts (3rd house) that can be executed over a short period (8th house). If the tenth lord is in the fifth house, it will be in the eighth sign from the tenth house that will show research, occult studies and gambling or speculation. From the tenth lord, the tenth house would be the sixth sign (upachaya) showing growth and achievement. It will also show service for the orphans, handicapped and old/sick people (8th house effect). It should be borne in mind that natural benefics like Jupiter and Moon if placed in the eighth from their sign, could cause damage to the same while their involvement in parivartan and other yogas will modify the negative results. The fourth basis is to consider the placement of the tenth lord or tenth house from the Paka & Arudha Lagna. Paka Lagna is the sign occupied by the lord of the ascendant. If the tenth house or tenth lord is in the Badhak or dusthana from the Paka & Arudha lagna, the results are obstruction and destruction respectively.

Natural strength of houses has been mentioned in books like Laghu Parasari etc. The quadrants, in the rising order of 1st, 4th, 7th & 10th are stronger than the Upachayas in the order 3rd, 6th & 11th (10th has been excluded as it is considered the strongest quadrant). The Upachayas are stronger than the trine fifth & ninth houses (the ascendant is excluded in this as it is placed among the quadrants). The 2nd & 12th houses have no strength of their own and depend on the other house lordship of their owner. The eighth house is always evil and is never stronger than the ascendant. Thus on the basis of lordship the planets can be placed in the following ascending order of natural strength (influence) in the chart: – 2nd, 12th, 5th, 9th, 3rd, 6th, 11th, 8th, 1st, 4th, 7th & 10th house lord. It is evident that the tenth lord is the most influential planet in the chart as the tenth house is the most potent house for any planet to be placed. This fact should be borne in mind while analyzing Rajyoga and Duryoga i.e. combinations for prosperity and penury.

Kendradhipati dosha or the negative effect of the ownership of quadrants by benefics implies reduction in their beneficence. The benefic owner of a quadrant is still a benefic and does not become a malefic. Similarly, a Malefic planet owning a quadrant will not remain a malefic and that does not imply that the malefic becomes a benefic. This loss of beneficence of a benefic lord of quadrant is called Kendradhipati dosha. This flaw is annulled if the planet is also well placed in a quadrant or trine. Similarly, a malefic planet owning a quadrant sheds its maleficence and will give very good results if placed in an evil house. If instead, the planet is placed in a quadrant or trine, the loss of maleficence may not occur fully. For example if Saturn is the lord of the 10th house for Taurus ascendant, its placement in the 12th house in debility will give excellent results like power, position and a good career. If the malefic is also the lord of a trine in addition to its ownership of a quadrant, then it becomes a yogakaraka producing auspicious results.

Yogakaraka means capability for producing auspicious results. The lord of the ascendant is the natural yogakarak in any chart as it the first house is a quadrant and a trine. The lords of trines (5th & 9th houses) are important for wealth and sustenance while the lords of the 4th, 7th & 10th contribute to the happiness. The 1st, 10th, 7th & 4th houses/ lords represent the four ayana’s (goals of life) called Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha (Readers may refer to the Srimad Bhagavat Gita for a detailed explanation of these goals). Yoga has been loosely interpreted as Union/association and in astrology this implies conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. A weaker yoga is caused by one planet aspecting the house of the other and vice-versa or by an exchange of constellation called sookshma yoga. The association of the lord of a quadrant with the lord of a trine results in Rajyoga producing auspicious results. Thus if the tenth lord associates with the ninth lord, Dharma-Karmadhipati yoga results. This is the highest Karma Yoga. Another form of this yoga is the association of the lord of the tenth house with the lord of the fifth house. Gyana Yoga (that leads to moksh) is caused by the association of the lord of the fourth house with the lord of a trine. This yoga gives great learning and knowledge. Subha yoga or good results are produced by the placement of the lord of a quadrant in a trine. Dur yoga or inauspicious results are produced by the placement of the lord of a quadrant in a dusthana (evil house). However, the duryoga is modified if it associates with the lord of a trine. Rajabhanga yoga is caused by the association of the lord of a quadrant with the lord of a dusthana in an evil house. If instead, they associate in a quadrant, Vipareeta Rajyoga occurs. Vipareeta Rajyoga is also caused by the association of the lords of two dusthana in an evil house. For example, if Taurus ascendant has Jupiter and Venus in the sixth house, they are the lords of the 8th and 6th houses (dusthana) associating in an evil house (6th house) resulting in destruction of enemies and good prosperity. If Virgo ascendant has Mars (3rd & 8th lord), Mercury (1st & 10th lord) and the Sun (12th lord) in the tenth house in Gemini, Vipareeta Rajyoga results during the period of Mars & the Sun only. Mahapurush yoga is caused by the placement of a planet in its own sign or in exaltation in a quadrant. The strength of the luminaries is very vital for initiating the Rajyoga and sustaining the same.

Kalyana Verma emphasizes the importance of planets in the tenth from the Moon sign and Hora Lagna. The mind is the controller of all actions and activity. The planets in the tenth house from the Moon sign or the lord of the tenth house from the Moon sign will give considerable information about the Career and fortunes of the native. Similarly, the tenth house from Hora Lagna should also be seen after studying the tenth from the ascendant. Table 13.3 gives the details. For example, if Mars strongly influences the tenth house from the Moon by placement or lordship, the native may travel to a distant land for his no livelihood.

HOW TO READ CHARTS I: KALA SARPA YOGA (4/4)

Kala Sarpa Yoga chart 5

Tales of the kāla sarpa/amṛta yoga are always best told through personal experience. As seen from the chart of this scribe, all the planets are placed between Rāhu and Ketu, and Ketu leads the pack of planets causing kāla amṛta yoga. The yoga occurs along the third/ninth axis showing that the issues of dharma, father, education, etc. would be the problem, just as in the third case example. Just as in the previous case Sun is in trines to Rāhu in the ninth showing that the native would disregard the father’s advice, yet be very respectful towards father as ātmakāraka is in the ninth house.

Mars and Saturn don’t influence the ninth through conjunction, but ninth lord is joined Saturn showing disappointment on part of the father. This scribe after completing his secondary education was unmotivated to continue his studies. Instead he sought to further his understanding of spirituality, and was considering all other studies as useless. The fourth house is the seat of formal (apara) studies and its lord Saturn is combust by its conjunction with the Sun in navāmśa. Since Rāhu also lords the fourth house in raśi the scene is set for disillusionment in formal studies, especially since the kāraka Mercury is placed in the fourth (education/studies) from Rāhu.

The issues took its height in his 21st year (Venus progression over Ketu), where after completing a mediocre year in software programming, this scribe decided to discontinue his studies and learn Jyotish and other occult studies, much to the parents dismay. Here we see that whilst the formal studies (fourth house) discontinued, instead the informal ones (fifth house) continued. Fifth lord is Jupiter joined Mercury which is a yoga for learning from the tradition (Jupiter). This occurs in the twelfth house and the native travelled abroad to learn Jyotish and tour the world for conferences. Mercury and Jupiter are the twelfth and sixth lords from ātmakāraka and shows the blessings of Viṣṇu and Brahmā would be on the native in this pursuit, but the involvement of Brahmā shows that this decision was made out of weakness, and that this scribe at that time felt burdened by his formal studies and sought to avoid the harsh truth that he had made some large blunders in his studies.

Unfortunately, Rāhu is in the sixth from arūḍha lagna and being the ātmakāraka can make a person take very strong and fanatical stands with the excuse of God and spirituality as their backing.

During the sabbatical this scribe was fortunate enough to learn various sadhanas which he practiced diligently under his Guru’s guidance. Rāhu in the ninth house as ātmakāraka will always protect the Guru, just as Saturn ātmakāraka in the lagna will always ensure strong spiritual ideals and make the person a brāhmaṇa doing good for society. These sadhanas were taught to this scribe with specific focus on breaking the kāla amṛta yoga in his chart. Here is the analysis of these remedies:

AGNI SADHANA : Sun represents the deity Agni according to Paraśara, and among the planets breaking the kāla amṛta yoga, only Sun in the lagna is doing so. During this time the native understood the need for him to write articles more seriously and compile them for the sake of teaching. Sun is the tenth lord and thus knowledge of karmayoga is granted as a result. As Agni is the Adhi-devata of the Sun, it promises the beginning/initiation (adhi=first) of all works/karma.

BAGALĀMUKHĪ SADHANA : Mars represents the deity Bagalāmukhī and with the exchange between Sun in the lagna and Mars in the tenth house, the native was initiated into this sadhana to imbibe this scribe with more discipline and character. It was a tough sadhana but paid of in a great way to give this scribe a better direction in life, especially in matters of education and career. It was due to this sadhana that the native became more settled in life and also decided to finish his education.

In matters of the ninth house and education Jupiter’s blessings are required. When progressed Jupiter arrived at Rāhu during the 25th year, this scribe entered into a serious relationship and felt the need to complete his formal studies. A book was also written and published during this time, and a stable astrological practice continued as a result. This scribe married one year later and is doing very well in his studies seeking to finish in the near future.

The full completion of Venus’ twelve year cycle of the kāla amṛta yoga is expected to come in the 32nd year of this scribe.

ENDNOTE

As evident, most of the cases of kāla amṛta/sarpa yoga cause delays and in some few cases also a complete denial of professional pursuit, until the issue is remedied. The cases cited above are the lucky ones, whilst many soul’s lives are quite trapped by the yoga and have yet to find any relief or stability in their life as a result. Due to the intense grasp of the nodes on the chart, some say that the leading node in the yoga (Rāhu for kāla sarpa, and Ketu for kāla amṛta) act as a temporary ātmakāraka until the yoga reaches its culmination.

It should be observed however that the kāla sarpa/amṛta yoga actually eclipses the soul/ātmakāraka temporarily and for this reason the ātmakāraka appears to be one of the nodes. In fact what is really happening is that just as Viṣṇu upholds the ātma in the form of an ātmalinga and sustains its existence, Ananta/Sesa naga upholds Viṣṇu. Thus just as if Viṣṇu were to remove the sustenance of the atma, it would die, so also if Ananta were to turn his head away then even Viṣṇu the Ista devata cannot help. This is the essence of the kāla sarpa/amṛta yoga.

Ananta is worshipped by ALL the Mahāvidya, hence all those planets joined the nodes, or first/seventh houses actually are the Mahāvidyā helping the native out of the grasp of the kāla sarpa/amṛta yoga. Worship of the Mahāvidya is thus essential to ensure the foundation for good things to come in life. The native sees their worship of the Ista devata prospering and all the happiness in life is secured.

Taking this knowledge to heart we must realize the importance of our own mother in flesh and blood, and how her blessing is in fact a manifestation of the Mahāvidyā through our karma. So do well in remembering your mother once in a while and asking for her blessing… OM MATRE NAMAH .

HOW TO READ CHARTS I: KALA SARPA YOGA (3/4)

WRITTEN BY VISTI LARSEN

Chart 3: Male

The native of the given chart is also born with kāla sarpa yoga. All planets are between the nodes, and Rāhu leads the pack. Rāhu is in the ninth house, and we can infer that the main issues will be that of 1) father, 2) dharma, 3) guru, 4) luck/bhagya and 5) education. Rāhu is the ātmakāraka as well, and a strong spiritual bent on life will be seen through the kāla sarpa yoga.

The Sun is the kāraka for father and is placed in the ninth from Rāhu. This doesn’t show loss, but can show problems in the relationship with father, and Rāhu specifically highlights the issue being due to not listening to or rejecting father’s advice. Further, Rāhu is involved in the conjunction with three other planets, among which two are the dire malefics Mars and Saturn, showing that the relationship with father can also be colored by anger (Mars) and sorrow (Saturn) respectively. As a result of which the native had considerable disagreements and fights with their father, mainly on topics of livelihood. Many of which the native was quite headstrong in his decisions, and led to more problems. These planets are notably in the fifth from arūḍha lagna showing that the native can attract wrong support and associations in life.

Thankfully the trinal placement of the Sun promises no break in the relationship between the native and their father, but since Rāhu is the ātmakāraka it can also show that a considerable shock may be experienced by the native during these times, and will mark a change in attitude of the native… The lessons of the ātmakāraka are always learnt well, after which the native either accepts their punishment and becomes God-fearing, or refuses to accept their punishment and become vengeful and bitter towards the world and God.

Jupiter is the kāraka for Guru and higher education and is joined Rāhu and the other malefics. This can show differences with the Guru as well as disjointed education and particularly in matters of character, health and personality, which will be the main issues of the native. Here it should be learnt that our close friends, loved ones and even the worst enemies hold no flaws as they also are souls living a material existence. Instead the flaw is in our own karma, which causes us to experience the karmic punishments through our mutual associations with each other.

Jupiter is joined the node, and shows that the 16th year itself can instigate the kāla sarpa yoga. During this time the native had been quite unruly, and the influence of friends as well as the disinterest in education and other related matters took to a new height.

The eighth lord from ātmakāraka shows the punishment of Śiva, and in this case is Jupiter who is afflicted in the mentioned yoga. The sixth lord from ātmakāraka shows the sins which created us and acts like Brahmā in the chart. When the two are joined in a malefic yoga, it surely promises swift and intense punishment due to our own failings, just as Siva burnt one of Brahmas heads when Brahmā was committing the sin of taking his own daughter as a wife.

The effects will definitely be felt on the native since Jupiter is also lagna lord. The years of the planets joined Rāhu will reveal some important incidents:

Mars rules the 7th year (vimśottari), and its higher multiple is the 14th year (2×7) was when the native had an ear operation and later some severe stomach problems (Leo) which till today are undiagnosed.

Saturn rules the 19th year (vimśottari length – Brahmā) during which the native was hit by a car, and then hospitalized for 3 weeks (Mars), and then was bedridden for 3 months at home. The most severe damage was to the hand (3rd/9th axis affects hands and legs, especially when Saturn or Rāhu afflict the Sun) which required considerable amount of surgery to bring back some of its function.

When Jupiter progressed over Ketu, the native’s life took a turn for the better. This was during the natives 22nd year during which he began meditating, and became very spiritual and God fearing. However, with all the malefic in the ninth house, the adharma they cause was surely going to continue the bad luck in his life. This showed up in problems in getting stable employment, and the native gave up his education as well, becoming a financial burden towards his parents and siblings.

Notably education is of considerable issue in cases of kāla sarpa yoga, as the kāraka for the higher education is Jupiter, who is a dire enemy to Rāhu.

Luckily the native was given initiation into the worship of Sri Tara in his 27th year, after considerable worship with guru-mantra over one year’s time. Following the initiation into Tara sadhana, the native is now the main bread earner in the family, and runs a stable astrology-consultation practice along with teaching. He has regained much of the strength of his hands. He has also entered into a long term relationship, and recently his 28th year has also begun coinciding with the hope of the entering into a more permanent bond.

Chart 4: Lady

Kala Sarpa Yoga, chart 4
Kala Sarpa Yoga, chart 4

The planets reside between the nodes in this case, yet unlike the previous cases Ketu leads the planets thus forming kāla amṛta yoga. This is formed along the second/eighth house axis showing the bondage being mainly that of money, family, debts, inheritance, disease, deaths, etc.

The native’s family saw considerable sorrow during the Yugoslavian wars, particularly including the loss of mother, paternal grandmother and grandfather. Due to the same war a large land-inheritance had been deprived of the native. We see that from the fourth lord Jupiter, Rāhu in the twelfth from it shows some type of loss. Mars in the eighth from the fourth house can suggest loss of land or property.

Ketu is the head of the yoga and being in the second and having the kārakas for wealth (Jupiter) and family (Moon) in the eighth from it showed the particular issues arising. Just as in the previous cases again the education was delayed as it took seven years to complete it.

Where we used Jupiter to specifically time the length and major events of the kāla sarpa yoga, we will use Venus for the same purpose in the case of kāla amṛta yoga. Venus is joined Rāhu showing that the 20th year was a major highlight in the person’s life, or the 14th year when Venus progressed over Ketu. It was in the 14th year when the native lost their mother during the raging wars in Croatia.

Ketu is in the sixth from ātmakāraka Jupiter, showing that the reason for these issues are due to inherent ripu/sin. Ketu is also the fourth lord from Jupiter showing that the anger of the divine mother also played an important role in the family’s devastation. Jupiter is lagna lord as well, and with a planet in the sixth from it, it does show that these incidents left a scar on this lady’s memories, as she had been instrumental in discovering her mother’s remains.

Venus is also the only planet breaking the kāla amṛta yoga by being joined one of the nodes, showing the sister, aunt or even of marriage are important ties to ensure the bonds of the kāla amṛta yoga are broken. Thankfully the maternal aunt played the role of a supporting mother and also helped the lady engage in more spiritual practices; showing how Venus always played an important role in breaking the bonds of the kāla amṛta and leading a more spiritually aware life.

Yet, the native did not live close to their aunt and was required to travel to keep this connection alive. A large spiritual support group (spiritual family-second house) was instead instrumental in her further spiritual awakening.

However, it was not until one year before the full cycle of 12 years reached its completion in her 25th year, when she met her husband to be. The lady was given initiation into Sri Kamalātmikā Sadhana in her 25th year, and subsequently one month after completing the first 40 days of sadhana, the lady met her husband to be. Venus receives digbala from the arūḍha lagna, and thus the south-eastern direction would be very auspicious to travel in. She did so and after one and a half year she was proposed to and married in her 27th year. Her financial insecurities were then solved, and she has seen a much happier relationship with her family due to her marital bond.

External view of a person by the world

EXTERNAL VIEW OF A PERSON BY THE WORLD

WRITTEN BY KHOO HOCK LEONG.

The 9th, 10th and 11th house of a chart represents the world’s view of a person. These are the primary houses ie. if you see the person from afar and you do not know him intimately (barring any knowledge like Arudha Lagna, divisional charts etc.), these houses would show how the world judge the person.

9th represents a person’s philosophical outlook. Is he charitable or is he a bigot? Is he a religious devout or highly superstitious?

10th represents a person’s work, actions, goals and accomplishments. His lasting achievements to the world.

11th represents the friends he mix with, the social circles he moves in, his particpation in altruistic organisations (9th being the 11th of the 11th also has some say on his social circles).

But the 3rd, 4th and 5th being the opposite of the said houses also has some say on this.

3rd represents the actions of a person – does he walk the talk? Is he someone who constantly strives for improvement in his neighbourhood or workplace. Does he have the intelligence to solve urgent problems at hand?

4th represents also the world’s view of the person’s character – as indicated in another thread of this forum. Is he deceitful, does he enjoy life, does the person seem to you have general happiness?

5th represents a person’s aspirations, ambitions. Does he have leadership potential? Does he have many children to carry on his progeny? Does he have a high IQ (being opposite to the 11th only the firends he mix with usually know this)?

Last but not least the 7th house. It is the 10th of the 10th. So it also has some say on the external view of a person by the world. But being only a secondary house, its effects may not be that accurate. For example you hear things like, that is only PR (public relations) talk, he is my best friend and I do not even know him or spouses cheating on each other.

When we come into contact with a person either cursorily (in person or watching a personal interview via TV etc.) other houses kicked in.

The 1st House the ASC is important. It shows the personality that comes across to a stranger who does not know the person in question before. Everyday interactions and responses with that person is also governed by the ASC eg. greeting him everytime the said stranger (now no more a stranger, say we call him an acquaintance) meets the person in the neighbourhood.

But the 2nd House is also important. It shows the class of the person from the way he speaks, his attitude towards life, his dressing, the ornaments he wears or has (like credit cards he holds!). It feeds or lends support to the impression cast by the ASC.

If the acquaintance becomes close friend of the person, then 7th house kicks in. As indicated in the earlier post, the 7th House is a deceptive house. Whether we are talking about an external view of a person or via personal contacts, there is always an element of deception. Mabye it is because the person wants the ‘closeness’ and yet he wants space of himself (ASC is casting full sight of 7th). And on top of that it is not a Dharma House unlike the 1st. So lies and deception come into play.

The 8th House which supports the 7th is the person’s resources. He guards it jealously from his best friend (formerly the acquaintance) unless they are very, very close (eg. inidcated by the nature of the planets found in 7th and 8th). The 8th also governs secrets, the innermost core of the person, his self which only by dint and effort (eg. through exercising closeness to him) can one find out the ‘treasure chest’. So in a way, 7th house which governs sex is one way to the route of this ‘treasure chest’ which amongst other things hold the sexual power of the person.

The 12th House which is 12th to the 1st, is a house of unconscious desires and erratic impulses. Again seldom can anyone knows this aspect of the person. Say, the person goes to work and one fine day he decides to take a detour across the border to another country and decides not to come back. Well, that is the 12th House impulse. Mabye he is fed up with his lot of life. His friends, neighbours and best friend would be shocked. Why would he do such a thing? But there is no answer because the 12th House is involved. Mabye his action is a one-in-a-lifetime kind of thing.

Opposite the 12th is the 6th and which is the complete opposite. The person’s old habits, routines, his particularities etc. are all noticeable when you come into contact with him including his gestures, mannerisms and quirkiness etc.
Thanks
KHOO HOCK LEONG.

10th and 1st house and 10 th Bhava midpoint

10TH AND 1ST HOUSE AND THE 10TH BHAVA MIDPOINT

WRITTEN BY KHOO HOCK LEONG

The relationship between the 10th hose and 1st house is again one-way if you consider the principles of House to House relationship and the 1st is the 4th to the 10th.

1st is the 4th to the 10th means that the foundation of th kind of image we show to the world, is based on the intelligence we manifest in the 1st. That is we engineer our image.

1st being a Higher Octave of the 10th (in fact two levels up above the hierarchy being the 7th to the 7th and the 7th is the 10th to the 10th) means that we do we frequently change the kind of image that we want to project to the world as we inteact with people (7th House) and evaluate the suitability the projected image gives us in terms of success (material or otherwise) ie. the 10th House.

Nevertheless, the 10th house is how the world see us and sometmes we are so immersed with th role, that it becomes part of us. (In this case the Lagna Lord is eclipsed by the 10th House Lord which is not generally the case for ALL people but due to the specfic planetary combination of a particular chart).

10th House basically rules the external MC in a figurative sense, so sometimes people can judge that its effects are so powerful that it may eclipse the Lagna. But this is the AREA RULED BY THE HOUSE as it is the house right on top of us as we walk about on Earth. We cannot really say the 10th House is stronger than the 1st House juste because of this mere fact. We have to consider house lords, planets placement, dispositors etc before we can decide.

BUT GENERALLy, the 1st house should be stronger than the 10th house based on the Higher Octave principle (House to House) and also it being the 4th to the 1st.

Now the Bhava midpoint for the 10th house shows the kind of career that is suitable for us. As mentioned earlier, if we become so involved in our career, that 10th Bhava midpoint can also become our general character. Hence I will try to give you a rough characterisation of the kind of person you are based on your 10th Bhava midpoint.

The general charcter of yourself based on the 10th Bhava midpoint. The numbers refer to degrees. Odd or even refers to odd or even signs respectively.

Indra (0-3 odd, 27-30 even) – A person who likes to control others or any situation which he finds himself in. Can lead to autocracy.

Agni (3-6 odd, 24-27 even) – Full of energy and aggressive. If a situation points to it being able to settle to his advantage or for the better of the community (eg. workplace), this person will be the first to initiate action.

Yama (6-9 odd, 21-24 even) – A person who stick closely to the rules. Can lack compassion if carried to extremes.

Rakshasa (9-12 odd, 18-21 even) – Law breaker in a literal or figurative sense. Will do what he wants and generally do not like to live under the yoke of authority. He sets his own value system.

Varun (12-15 odd, 15-18 even) – A caring or nourishing person. Much like the Nakshatra Revati eg. caring for pets, children. Likes to travel especially via water.

Vaayu (15-18 odd, 12-15 even) – A person who has ideas to disseminate. A person who frequently changes his stance towards life be it clothes, philosophy, objectives, goals etc.

Kubera (18-21 odd, 9-12 even) – A great financial controller for the household or at work. This person keeps track of his personal assets closely. A person who will never be left down and out.

Ishaan (21-24 odd, 6-9 even) – An alms giver and a person who works hard for society’s improvement. Does not like to see any persons sufferig and if he does, will try to alleviate the situation.

Brahma (24-27 odd, 3-6 even) – A person full of ideas which can manifest into reality. A creative person. Nothing is too difficult for this person to achieve if he puts his heart and soul towards it.

Anant (27-30 odd, 0-3 even) – A cosmopolitan person. He likes to eat different kinds of international food, experience foreign cultures, watch foreign fine arts. A jet setter and a globe trekker.

Thanks.

Understanding karmaphal and past life astrology

UNDERSTANDING KARMA PHALA AND PAST LIFE ASTROLOGY

SOURCE AND INFORMATION ; VARGA CHAKRA , SANJAY RATH )

THE JYOTISHA DIGEST , “ANALYSIS OF VARGA CHARTS “ BY MANOJ KUMAR GUPTA

JAGANNATHH DREKKAN BY VISTI LARSEN

We will study about the JAGANNATHH DREKKAN along with D1 and D9.
Generally, D3 or Dresh-Kana, drekkana has a root connected with the word Darshan which means seeing or visualizing objects those are apparent and hidden in nature. Kana means the corner and in the astrological language, it speaks about the Trikonas or trine. Thus, the word Drekkana represents the division where the sign, trine speaks about the Apparent and hidden personality, nature of the native chart.
Whereas, Jagannath Drekkana used for understanding Deep-rooted karmic phalas those are results of the actions one’s soul has done in its previous birth and also speaks about the What soul has to do in current birth or to know about the sole purpose or what native has to do, in order to fulfill the task assigned to him or her by the divine master based on his previous birth karma.

That what we had studied in the Karma theory and we called it as Karma yoga or the sole purpose of this birth. This is the only reason why Jagannath drekkaṇa is the most important divisional chart to understand the task assigned or life direction of the native for its success or failure, to understand all sort of fluctuation one may face in current birth.
Even it shows, what Native has brought back from the past life that one has to bear it or go through it in current birth. This can be understood in a way that what is the root cause of this birth actions as a result of the past karma done by the soul.It is more about understanding one’s Karma and actions related to self, for self-growth and self-evaluation and bearing pain or suffering for the next journey of the soul.
To understand one’s actions and karma phala of one, the focus is on the third house and its lord, it will speak more about the nature of the karma yoga and the phala connected with it.

STEP 1: What you have to do

1) First, of all, we have to study or see the 3rd lord of the Natal chart which acts as Karyesa then see where the Karyesa is placed in the Jagannath Drekkana chart (D3) and which house does it lord.
2) The placement and houses lorded by the Karyesa of the D1 in D3 indicate what is the prime area where one has to go through it, it could also indicate one about its suffering or its redemption one can get from his past life karma.
3) Meanwhile, any Planet in 3rd house of the D3 Shows what native has to do in future for fulfilling the goals of life that have assigned to the native.
4) Placement of the 3rd lord of D3 shows what is the Karma Phala that one brought from the past life and also shows how he has to manifest or perform in this current birth, spiritually or materially if the 3rd house of the D3 is vacant.

STEP 2: Check Tattava or nature of the Signs in D3 Chart
All the Chara Rashi’s shows — BHU-LOKA (Earth)
All the Sthira Rashi’s shows — BHUVA-LOKA (Grahas or Dieties of the Solar System)
All the Dual Sign shows — SWARGA-LOKA (Higher Gods and Deities)

Bhu-Loka (Chara Rashi) shows the earth and any planet in it show suffering due to bad karma one has done on earth in the previous life to someone. This also indicates that sufferings those are dynamic in nature and it can go and come on the journey of life during its Dashas, Bhukti, and Pratyantar dashas.Basically, it shows about Suffering those are temporary in nature and shall not carry forward till whole life.
Any Planet in the Sthira Rashi (Bhuva-Loka) shows sufferings that one gets via the anger or affliction of the planetary deity toward the native actions in the past life.
Any planet in the Dual Rashis (Swargaloka) shows that Gods or Higher Deities are not happy toward the native previous birth actions. It majorly shows the anger of the higher god toward the person and affliction is at the Nakashtra level (Health). Here, there is no redemption from such Sufferings and painful experiences. The motive could be lying in the eternal growth of the native or future spiritual manifestation of the soul.
Suffering one get at the Bhu-Loka is changeable and temporary in nature and we have to check it from the lagna level (Body- Tanu — Ascendant) in the form of other people, relationships and nature we might receive from them. It’s more like the influence on us via others (More it is like Rinanubandhan) who are closely associated with us.
Suffering one get at the Bhuva-Loka is at the Aatmic level (Soul realization, Sun Lagna) and one might get in the form of wealth, Finance, and Soul transformations those are all represented by the nature of sun (Sun Shows Wealth of any type i.e knowledge, Aatmic Gyan, Financial wealth, Wealth from Children’s, Name, Fame and Status etc). Wealth could be in any form as might also show one of the Punya of the past life too.
Suffering one get at the Swarga-Loka shows realization at the subconscious Level (Mind, ruled by Moon), it mostly indicates suffering one will face via mental actions, via Manan and it is mostly seen at the nakshatra level and majorly affects the health of the native and it is impossible to redeem in any case.
Now, Let’s understand Jagannath drekkena chart by example chart:

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

In the chart of the Swami Viveka Nanda chart, the 3rd house of the Natal chart is ruled by two lords Rahu and Saturn and both Saturn and Rahu are somehow interconnected with each other. Saturn being (BK- Bharti Karka) is in the 10th house from the Sun (AK) with 8th lord Moon and Saturn is aspecting Rahu from the 3rd house that shows deep-rooted Karmic task assigned and given to Swami Viveka Nanda for the well-being of the society and mankind by Karma Yoga (Moon and Saturn in 10th — A yogi is born).
Saturn is all about studying deep-rooted karmas and experiencing and realizing deep karmic roots for uplifting those who are in need.
Its a good yoga of learning Karma and its pahla by self-realization and, as in Swami Vivekananda case Saturn being 3rd lord associated with the 8th lord moon, so it is all about finishing the task of past birth assigned to him for liberating many souls those are directionless or unguided from the present birth tasks.
karyesha (3rd lord of the D1) is Saturn is placed in the 6th house in Sthira Rashi of Taurus (Sign of Wealth, family & values). As Karyesha is placed in the fixed sign, Suffering is at the Bhuva-Loka , means one who realized at the Soul level, here Soul experiences are mainly ruled. it is about to learn at the Atmic level (Soul realization, Sun Lagna) and one gets in the form of wealth, Finance, and Soul transformations.
Here Wealth could be in any form as might be one of the Punya of the past life too.
In Swami Vivekananda chart, Graha (Planetary deity) is angry toward him and affliction is at the graha level and he will suffer on account of planetary anger.

In D3 chart Saturn (BK- shows Guru teaching for the karma yoga of future) is placed in the sign of Taurus (Wealth and family values) with Moon (Amk — Task given to him) and Mercury clearly shows Swami Vivekananda has to leave or sacrifice family life or follow the path of Moksha or liberation, or on account of his family wealth. This will happen only when he will meet his guru and he will realize his Soul purpose, as Saturn being Bk also lord of the 2nd and 3rd house in both D1 and D3 chart placed in the 6th house with Moon and Mercury. Swami will accomplish this task via self-learning, self-realizing it via Manan or practicing it via deep self-questioning or via meditation.
As in both D1 and D3 chart, Karyesha Saturn and other lord Rahu is placed in the sign of Pisces and Taurus getting Rashi aspect from Jupiter and Sun (Ak).
As 8th lord moon is involved here with Karyesha Saturn (BK), swami Viveka Nanda will realise this life Karma-Yoga after meeting his divine guru who would be a Kali or Devi worshipper (Saturn is with Moon shows Devi worshipper or diety who illuminates one’s darkness from the soul and karma) and then he will realise his life goal or would understand his task given via his guru teaching, guidance and he will undetake this task Via mediation — Manan (Moon being ruled by the Apara Vidya and also Amk too, shows all form of knolwedge one experience, realise or one get it via manan or via senses and it inculdes all the worldy knowledge in any art and science, including the knowledge of vedas, Vedanta, and Vedanga).
Apara Vidya encompasses the entire spectrum of ‘objects’, that is, anything that can be objectified by our senses or mind. Anything that can be ‘seen’ is an object of Apara Vidya. Under this category comes all our worldly knowledge’s. Science, arts, commerce, management, technical knowledge’s etc. Interestingly the teacher even classifies the knowledge of the Vedas and Vedanga’s in this category, because they are also a part of the limited & changing world in front of us. Apara Vidya is worth knowing because of various reasons. One, specialization in any one field of objective world, helps us to serve our society & world better, two, pursuit of knowledge disciplines our mind & intellect, so that we become capable of thinking deeply & properly, and last but not the least, this pursuit of Apara Vidya helps us to realize the ephemerality of the objective world, and thus helps us to get qualities of vairagya etc, and also motivates us to look out for something more permanent in this ever changing world. The objective of this categorization is to indicate to us that however much we may know the world outside, but by this pursuit alone we shall never move towards omniscience. Apara Vidya shall help us to make a living, have a dignified & respectable life, have a thoughtful intelligent mind, but never ever hope that you shall move towards omniscience. This is not the way for the fulfillment of such an aspiration.
This clearly shows swami Vivekananda eternal goal for this life is to awake people those who are misguided in the path of darkness to move toward balanced material and spiritual knowledge.
In D3 chart Karyesha is placed in the 6th house who is the ruler of 2nd and 3rd house shows swamiViveka-Nanda has to accomplish this Karma yoga task via visiting to many places, communicating, via delivering the speeches, traveling or leaving his family life.
As Both Jupiter and Venus are Aspecting it from the 11th and the 2nd house from the D3 lagna via Rasi drishti. He has to do this task via learning and experiencing every sort of material and non material knowledge and he needs to travel across the globe to deliver it in many of the forms, as sun being AK placed in the 8th from the Karyesha and lordship of the 8th from it, Jupiter also aspecting it shows that the, its a long lasting task assigned to him for the well being of the society till his conscious soul is alive. Its an Atmic task given to him for uplifting mankind.
I hope from above-mentioned example chart and understanding on Jagannarh Drekkana D3 chart, one can understand his karma yoga and find his soul purpose and able to do his destined karma yoga of the future life.

Ganapati mantras

GANAPATHI MANTRAS

WRITTEN BY VEDIC JYOTISHI SHANKER JI

Gana means an get-together to people in order to achieve an aim decided upon among themselves and the person who lead them is called Ganapati(leader of the group of men

Birth of Ganpati is very strange as once Mother Parvati wanted to take bath and there was no one to guard her at the time when she is taking bath. So she created a clay boy out of her body mud and put life into it and asked the boy to Guard the place till she finisher her bath.

The boy took her orders and was guarding the place and that time Sri Siva arrived. The boy objected him to enter into the house for which Siva was angry and asked his Ganas to destroy the boy and remove him. Ganas did their best with all their might but they could not remove the boy from the premises as he fearlessly fighting them. Finally Ganas gave up and asked Siva to do something. Siva threw his Trident(Shoola) at the boy and severed his head.

When Parvati came out she saw her boy dead and was very ferocious and she cried and her cry went all round the inhabitants creating lot of confusion and it also create Pisachas and they started destroying the Ganas of Siva. Big war broke out between Siva and Parvati destroying the entire heaven and earth.

During this time Vishnu and Brahma appeared and they pleased Siva to restore the child and bring him back to life for which Siva agreed. He instructed his Ganas to move towards the North Eastern direction and look for any dead animal and bring its head. They found an dead Elephant head which they cut it off and brought it to the Siva.

Siva asked the Ashwini kumars(Celestial doctors) to attach the head to the boy and later Siva put life into the boy and the boy emerged alive(back to life)

)and made him the leader of his Ganas (devatas) .Since then the entire world started to pray to Ganesha to remove all obstacles in their path.

Ketu in any sign is like Headless and it will bring in troubles to the native due to his own mistakes and also due to Pisachas tormenting us…Due to this untoward behaviour we end up becoming sick. This is because of Anger(Mars) and Sorrow(Saturn). The way out of this is to check the placement of the Ketu in your sign and if it is not conjoined any planet need to recite the mantra of that sign lord, But if is conjoined with the following planets then the mantra is prescribed below:

Badhaka Removal mantras:

For every movable sign 11th house is badhaka house

For every fixed sign 9th house is badhaka house

For every dual sign 7th house is badhaka house

For example let us suppose Leo lagna is rising which is a fixed sign for which 9th house badhaka sthana and badhakesa is Mars(Aries sign lord). See the placement of mars in the chart(Mars will act like Rahu) as Rahu is a natural badhaka as he is the graha associated with our rebirth. From the placement of this Badhakesa(in this case) take the 7th sign from it which will act like Ketu(Ganesha obstacle remover) and see the sign and pick the relevant mantra and read it everyday 108 times

Deep exaltation point and digbala

DEEP EXALTATION POINTS AND DIGBALA
WRITTEN BY KHOO HOCK LEONG

Deep Exaltation Points

Let’s take a look at the deep exaltation points of various planets and see where it is placed in the sign and what it means. Each Drekkana of a sign represents childhood, adulhood and old age respectively.

Sun is Exalted in 10 degrees Aires – A person enjoys his manhood, career and splendor at the start of his adult life just before he embarks his journey as an adult (start of 2nd Drekkana). For example, for graduates they get jobs very easily after their University Education. Their health and vitality in tackling everything that comes in their way is infectious. However only active people (cardinal signs) are given this blessings. Also they must always steer in the right path before they can rise up in life (fire signs).

Moon is Exalted in 3 degrees Taurus – Most of the capacity of our mind for learning is predetermined at birth. Mundane affairs also must be in order very early otherwise we would not be able to tackle the other areas of our life ie. our house must be in order first. (start of 1st Drekkana). The mind that is not wavering and able to focus on things (fixed signs) is best. Mind + Effort = Achievements – that is why earth sign is good for the Moon.

Mercury is Exalted in 15 degrees Virgo – We communicate and think best at the prime of our life (middle of 2nd Drekkana). We do also our best work here incorporating planning and controlling of resources. Flexible thinking is best as it brings forth more productive work (mutable signs). Thinking + Effort = Ideas – Earth signs gives effort and ideas that are practical.

Venus is Exalted in 27 degrees Pisces – Love reaches its highest state when we are very old (end of 3rd Drekkana). We are then able to understand and experience the various kinds of love that has been bestowed upon us and those that we have given to others. Love should not be constricting but must empathise (mutable signs). To love a person gives content and inner peace to us as well as the loved one (Water Signs).

Mars is Exalted in 28 degrees Capricorn – Our effort is steady (we change jobs less often) when we are old (end of 3rd Drekkana). We also have garnered enough experience to know how to expend our effort wisely. Effort is most active in cardinal signs as they are signs of activity. Effort is inherently Earthy (Earth Signs) where it can combine with thinking skills using our mind (the previous two Earth Signs where Mercury and Moon are Exalted).

Jupiter is Exalted in 5 degrees Cancer. Our moral values start to form when we are early teenagers. There is a sudden leap from living beings to actually morally aware beings. We start to understand what is ethics – the rights and wrongs of things. (middle of 1st Drekkana). Water signs are fluid in nature so we understand that right and wrong are relativistic in nature. We come to understand what we mean by facing a moral dilemma and however hard it is, we must make a decision. Also ethics is not armchair philosophising but we must make it part of our everyday actions (cardinal signs).

Saturn is Exalted in 20 degrees Libra. We know about justice and fairness and our own rights when at the start of our old age (early of 3rd Drekkana). We are weary of life and having gone through a large part of it, we want the remaining leg to be something which is fair to ourselves and not to be taken advantaged of. Fighting for rights and justice requires activities like negotiation, lobbying etc (cardinal signs). Rights and justice only exist when a group of people decide to live together in a society (air signs).

Rahu is Exalted in 20 degrees Taurus. During the start of our old age where we still have a few more years to go before retirement, we try to race to the finishing line trying to garner as many medals and silvers as possible along the way. (start of 3rd Drekkana). We may not use fair means either in a literal sense or in a figurative sense it means we try to expend more effort on getting more of what we want rather than let the other party have it. The focus must be of a high order (fixed sign) as we try ways and means to gain on every transaction. Again Earth signs are best for concentration of the mind.

Ketu is Exalted in 20 degrees Scorpio. Our attitude towards moksha start to be felt strongly at the start of our old age. Mabye some of us decide we have enough and decide to go for early retirement or to choose to work on our spiritual path. (start of 3rd Drekkana). Water signs allow for the invigoration of spiritual fire within us every now and then. There is no permanent state of enlightenment. We always strive for the next higher rung of enlightenment until we reach nirvana. (water signs). But when we strive for the next round of enlightenment, we must not fall back onto the lower level. A fixed sign is therefore important in this regard.

Digbala

A planet can only have dignity when in Kendra. Why? In olden times, we judge a king or any important person by the way he display himself in public, if he lives amicably with his wife and friends (neighbouring countries), if he has a charitable and kind disposition with a large palace and if he has a commanding personality. If he does it well, we say the person has dignity. Planets have dignity only in the Kendra houses because these houses rule the four areas just mentioned.

Jupiter has dignity in the 1st. Subjects like their king to be benevolent, wise and charitable towards them. Subjects also like their king to be intelligent and analytical so that he can make everyday decisions promptly on kingdom mattes (Mercury in 1st).

Moon has dignity in the 4th. Subjects like their king to be compassionate on the inside. They would scrutinize how many amnesties he has granted when he takes over the throne. Venus also has dignity in the 4th. Subjects celebrate and follow the king behind when he comes out in grand conveyances. The more he is adorned with luxuries, the more they come to the conclusion that their kingdom is doing well. Friendliness to the subjects by the king while he journeys in his conveyance is always welcomed by this subjects.

Saturn has dignity in the 7th. Subjects like their king to be fair and just. He must be well versed in the law so that he can enact laws that would govern the country properly and helps it to prosper. A tyrannical or pleasure seeking king is scorned with disgust.

Mars has dignity in the 10th. Subjects like their king to be hardworking – everyday busy with court affairs. That is where his energy should be channeled like military decisions rathr than enjoying the concubines (Venus in 10th is bad). Sun has dignity in the 10th. Part of the king’s day is sitting on throne dispensing with rulings and decisions. The more rulings and decisions he make that are sound, the more he shines. As the saying goes, shine like the midday sun and his splendour of his ruling would reach far and wide amongst all provinces in the country.

Thanks.
